RIDING THE TRACE

We took a little trip down the trace in Hattiesburg yesterday to ride bikes.  It was such a nice feeling to not have to worry about traffic or anything.  Just during the past two weeks Anne and I have almost been hit by a car while walking and riding our bikes in  town.  I just don't think people here pay attention and look for cyclists or pedestrians.  I really wish we had bike lanes or something like the trace here.
Doesn't that sounds like a great project Laurel!!?
Until then, I'm sure we'll be making that 30 minute drive for most of our bike rides.

And even though it was 90+ degrees outside, the wind was nice and it wasn't too bad in the shade.

CINDERELLA THEATER CAMP

One thing Anne looks forward to all year is theater camp at Laurel Little Theater.  These kids learn an entire musical in ten days... I'd say that's pretty amazing!
The show changes each year and this year was Cinderella...Rodger and Hammerstein's version.
Anne played the role of a daughter of the town's people.
She even had a small solo that she rocked!
Anne loved getting to see old friends and meeting new ones...there's something about theater friends, they seem to break boundaries of age, race, and gender.  It always makes my heart happy to see the older ones taking care of the younger.... this is such a great group of kids!
It's always a little bitter sweet when a show ends.

SLIP AND SLIDE FUN

With highs in the mid 90's we're constantly looking for ways to beat the heat.  Today it was an $8 slip and slide from the dollar store at Papa's house.  The kids LOVED it and played for hours.

Once, Liam figured it out he loved it too.  We just had to give him a little push to get down the slide.

What are some things you're doing with your kids to stay cool? We love the pool, but once Liam is ready to get out we pretty much have to go home.  It's no fun at all chasing a toddler around a pool.

TOUCH A TRUCK

Laurel MainStreet  hosted a really fun event this past Saturday called Touch a Truck.  There were all types of service trucks and vehicles there that you could sit in, climb on, and honk!  Anne and Liam both had a wonderful time!

I sure do love these two boys.

Anne, Sadie, and Caroline got to see what it was really like to be in the back seat of a police car..they were even asked to hold their hands behind their backs pretending to be handcuffed.  I don't think they liked it very much when we closed the doors on them!

There was a life flight helicopter that landed and the kids could then go and check it out up close. So cool!

This was definitely a fun event that I hope we do again next year!

STRAWBERRY BANANA POPSICLES

The other day I saw my friend Erin post that she had made strawberry basil popsicles on instagram.  Doesn't that sound yummy?  Well, I didn't think my kids would go for the strawberry basil, but it did spur me to try a new popsicle in our Zoku.  I started with almond milk and fresh berries.

I blended the berries with just enough milk that it wouldn't be too thick.  I also just threw in the whole berry.  The leaves are the healthy part, right?  Once this was blended well, I decided it still needed something....so I added one banana.  It was the perfect thing to sweeten it a little.
Next, I put it in the Zoku.

Ten minutes later we had these really yummy popsicles.  Liam definitely loved them...Anne, not so much.  Not too surprised since she doesn't love strawberries to begin with.

Next time I think I'd like to cut the strawberries ahead of time and maybe add a little sugar, but we will definitely be making more of these!

FRESH BATHED BABE

When I pulled Liam out of the bath this morning, he got away and started playing before I could even get a diaper on him.  Instead of doing too much chasing, I grabbed the camera to capture the cuteness of this sweet baby.  He loves when I brush his hair after his bath...he'll stand in the mirror just smiling and laughing at himself.
He kept grinning at me like he knew he wasn't supposed to be naked, but was really enjoying it.
I'm sure we can all relate to that :)

Then he started playing the congos that go with the donkey conga game that we haven't played in ages...speaking of, I think I'd like to drag that back out again.  I'm sure Anne and Liam would love it!

The he dropped it on his toe, which I'm sure hurt really badly.
But it was no time before he was happy again and playing.

I can't get enough of these precious curls.  I hope he always has curly hair.

Then I started getting nervous that he was gonna pee on the floor.  Lord knows we're doing enough of that with a new puppy, so I chased him down and strapped on a diaper.

THE PARADISE

Have you heard of The Paradise?  I am a little embarrassed to say that I've watched 8 episodes in the past three days--meaning I've stayed up way past my bedtime and needed an extra cup of coffee during the day.  I'm such a sucker for anything from this time period.  Sometimes I think it would be fun to have lived during this time.  Then I think how much I love electricity and the conveniences we have now...so maybe pretend for a while and try it out!
I am anxiously waiting for the next season of Downton Abbey, now I can add the next season to The Paradise to that list.  The first season is on Netflix right now, so if you're looking for some way to spend your weekend here ya go!
Why do you think some of us are so drawn to this time period?
I feel like it's the romance and courtships...but who knows :)

Also, my Canadian blogger friend Amanda, wrote a really great post about her visit to Laurel!  If you have a minute you should definitely check it out.  It made me proud of our little town!

NEW NEIGHBORS

We've been hoping and praying for just the right person to come along and rent our retail space downstairs.  It's been vacant about 5 months and has had lots of interest but nothing ever worked out.  Thankfully all those others fell through because we are so very excited to have Sean Stewart as our new neighbor!
Sean is a super cool wood cut print maker and I've always loved his quirky and unique style.
Seriously, this is one of the sweetest families in Laurel.  I just know Julie and I are about to be bff's.
Of course, Anne is just happy to have some play mates so close.  She is constantly looking out the windows to see when the kids are here.  It's like Christmas..."Mom, the Stewart's are here, the Stewart's are here!!!
They are definitely brightening up Magnolia Street!  Y'all come by and say hello if you're in the neighborhood!!!

WHAT WE'RE DOING THIS SUMMER

Everyone keeps asking me what we've got planned for the summer (thanks to teaching I get the next two months off!)...well, the answer to that is pretty much whatever we want.  We don't have any major plans or vacations for this summer so we're just taking things in stride and seeing what fun pops up here and there.  I'm hoping to get to the beach at some point, but that's yet to be set in stone.  Do you know of a condo for cheap???
The one thing I have been looking forward to about summer is just having some time at home.  There are lots of organizing/cleaning projects that need to be done and I wanted to spend time with my kiddos.  I'm a constant cleaner upper...I usually can't stand the toys and dvds to be strewn all over the floor, but I'm trying to chill out a little and enjoy playing with my kids.  I have found that when I get down on the floor with them and play, it's lots more fun for them and me.

I know everyone always says this, but kids really do grow up too fast.  A friend of ours once said that at this point in life we're living long days and short years.  I can't tell you how true this is for us.  I just want to try and soak up my kids while their young.
I'm thankful that God is constantly reminding me of how fleeting this life is.
