Art Talk with Kayla Gates...and a giveaway!

I am thrilled to have Kayla doing our interview today!  I have recently gotten to know her better, and she is an absolute precious girl...not to mention how creative and talented she is!  She is one half of Anchor & Sparrow with Gabby being the other half :)
Name, age, hometown, blog/website
Hi readers of Hello Dearie! I love this weekly post that Dawn does and I'm so honored to be a part of it! My name is Kayla Gates, I am 19 years old and I was born and raised in the sweet, quaint town of Laurel, Mississippi. I talk about my little town and what inspires me quite often on my blog, Yellow Bird. (http://happyyellowbird.blogspot.com/)

When did you first discover your creative talents?
Growing up I always loved when my Aunt Paula would come from her home in Texas and visit for the summer. She was an art teacher and I would always beg her to do arts and crafts with me. I loved doing it so much! She taught me how to crochet, paint and pretty much everything else that I know that is related to art. I've always loved to do things that were considered "crafty" or "creative", but not until around three years ago did I really consider what I did a "talent".

What inspires you and keeps you motivated to create?
My friends always keep me motivated. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by positive and supportive people. I also seem to be inspired by people that I see are doing exactly what they want to do in life and succeed. Being a college student, the choice of what career path to take is something that I'm still confused about. I love seeing artist that pursued their dream wholeheartedly and are completely happy with their decision! I think that inspires me and motivates me the most to continue to do what I do.

How would you describe your style?
I wear what I love! I love modern twist on vintage styles. I believe that dresses are a lot more comfortable than jeans (and way cuter!), I wear tights a little too much, and Forever21 is my closet. My favorite thing to do, fashion wise, is to layer. I love the layered look and it enables me to make a million different outfits without breaking my budget. One of my fashion goals is to make some of my own clothes! Dawn is helping me with that :)

Who are some people that have inspired your work?
As I've said before, some of my biggest inspirations come from seeing other independent artist succeed. I think one of my absolute biggest inspirations is Elsie Flanagan (now Elsie Larson!) of Red Velvet. She is living my absolute dream! Seeing her succeed and blossom is so inspiring to me!
What is something funny that's happened to you recently?
Last week our air conditioner wasn't working at my house. When the man came to fix it, I was the only one at home so I let him in. Knowing absolutely nothing about the air conditioner, I showed him the hot water heater instead of our air conditioner unit. He chuckled and told me that what he needed to see would be outside, I was immediately embarrassed because realized what I had done! I will never forget that!

How do you bridge the gap between creating and running a business?
Since Anchor & Sparrow isn't in a store (yet!) that gap isn't too big. Most of what I do thus far is custom orders online, so that makes it rather easy to constantly being in the "creating" mindset. I've definitely had to sacrifice a lot of free time to create because I'm a full time student and I have a part time job, but it is completely worth it. I absolutely love making things for people.

Describe yourself in 5 words.
Happy. Kind. Peaceful. Goofy. Loving.

Any advice for aspiring artists/designers?
Whatever you do, give it 100%. Don't be afraid of failure. Do what you love. Surround yourself with positive people and don't let anyone tell you you can't reach your goal! And always believe in yourself!

Thank you, Kayla for doing this interview! It was so fun to get a peek into your creative world.
